Online safety
Overview
Our teaching on online safety addresses the digital world as young people actually experience it — not as adults imagine it.
This isn't about scare tactics or telling young people the internet is dangerous. It's about helping them understand the specific risks they face: how personal information gets exploited, what looks like when it happens in a DM, why privacy settings matter, and what to do when something online makes them feel uncomfortable or unsafe.
This topic takes in cyberbullying, online strangers, data sharing, digital footprints, and more — and the angle depends on the age group, the context, and what's actually happening in young people's digital lives right now. We also help young people think critically about the platforms they use every day — who designed them, what they're designed to do, and how to use them without being used by them.
Key learning outcomes
By the end of lessons on this topic, students will:
- Understand the key risks of online activity, including contact from strangers, data exploitation, and cyberbullying
- Recognise the signs of online grooming and know how to respond
- Develop practical strategies for protecting personal information and privacy online
- Learn what a digital footprint is and why it matters for their future
- Build critical thinking about the platforms and apps they use daily
- Know how to report harmful content or behaviour online
- Understand that the same expectations of respect and apply online as offline
Why teaching about online safety matters
Young people's lives are lived online to an extraordinary extent — their friendships, their social status, their exposure to risk all play out on screens. Telling them to "be careful online" is about as useful as telling someone to "be careful outside."
Effective online safety education is specific, practical, and honest about the reality of digital life. It gives young people the tools to protect themselves — not by avoiding the internet, which isn't realistic, but by navigating it with awareness and confidence.
Curriculum alignment
This topic addresses 40 requirements from the DfE statutory RSE guidance and 9 learning outcomes from the PSHE Association Programme of Study , across KS1, KS2, KS3, KS4, KS5.
